Clade
Subclade Archosauria: Avemetatarsalia to Neornithes

Taxon Feedback
Taxon Dromaeosauridae
Nominal Author Matthew and Brown 1922
2° Nominal Author Russell 1969
Taxon Status active
inactive
Comments The active definition is a first-order revision of the first definition in Sereno (1998), using species as specifiers. Following Padian et al. (1999), Dromaeosaurus albertensis is used as an internal specifier rather than Velociraptor mongoliensis to ensure inclusion of the eponymous genus. Velociraptor mongoliensis is better known but not appreciably more nested within the clade than Dromaeosaurus albertensis. The only coelurosaurs that have been placed by quantitative analysis as sister taxon to dromaeosaurids besides troodontids are ornithomimosaurs and birds. Nested specifiers from these two clades are cited as additional external specifiers to maintain the content of Dromaeosauridae under alternative phylogenetic arrangements.

Current Age Range Feedback
Earliest Record Hauterivian-Barremian (approx. 135 Ma)
Latest Record Maastrichtian (66 Ma)
Range (My) 69
Basis for Range The earliest record is Utahraptor ostrommaysi from the Cedar Mountain Formation of Utah; the latest records are dromaeosaurids from the Maastrichtian of western North America, Asia and possibly southern Europe (Norell and Makovicky 2004). Dates are rounded to the nearest million, the earliest from the midpoint of the two listed stages and the latest from the end of the stage (Gradstein et al. 2004).
