Critique No definition has been proposed. Romer (1956) established this taxon to include the genera Dyoplax, Notochampsa, Pedeticosaurus, Platyognathus, and Protosuchus. This taxon was later used by Sill (1967) and Steel (1973) to encompass a group of what was then seen as primitive crocodilians. According to their classification schemes, Notochampsidae and another family-level taxon, Proterochampsidae, were included within the basal crocodilian taxon Archaeosuchia. Recent cladistic analyses (e.g. Gauthier 1986, Sereno 1991, Juul 1994, Benton 1999) have shown proterochampsids to be outside Archosauria as defined in this database. Notochampsidae, within which Steel (1973) included Microchampsa and Orthosuchus, on the other hand, has fallen from use.
